Day 4, 1/01/02: A New Year, a New Gearbox
![]() |
A very productive day, this was, though only a small portion of it was dedicated to this project. I shaved off as much gearbox plastic as possible with my Dremel in standard fashion, but decided to go the extra mile and make an aluminum motor plate. I was inspired by a couple of Rustlers I'd seen with aluminum plates over the pinion/spur side of the tranny half to keep the motor mounting screws from chewing into the stock mount. I decided to take this idea a couple steps further, cutting out an aluminum piece to mount on the motor side while removing a big chunk of the stock mount. This combination created a nice supplementary heat sink and a firmer motor mount. The mount was held in by the upper motor screw and one 3mm bolt & nylock nut tucked away behind the motor, just under the spur gear.
I mounted a fresh spur gear with new friction pegs and an aluminum locknut over the slipper spring for good luck. I also test-fitted my MIP CVD outdrive hubs and completely removed the stock a-arm mounts.
No, that is not the motor I was going to use -- it was just the first thing I grabbed out of my motor drawer to do a test-fit.
Day 5, 1/02/02
Nothing new today -- I spent too much time getting caught up on the forums and working on the site.
